The IdeaFOAMer is a dedicated foaming TPU insole printer for podiatry clinics and orthotic labs. Based on the IdeaFormer IR3 V2, it is modified, optimised and pre-configured by EVOK3D, and built as a controlled production workflow from design file to finished insole. There is more to show you. For now, here is what it is built to do.

Why make your own

Soft insoles, made in your own clinic or lab

Bring production of soft and accommodative insoles in-house. You decide what gets printed and when, and a change to a design can go straight back on the machine rather than back into someone else's queue.

The IdeaFOAMer is dedicated to this one job rather than being a general-purpose 3D printer. Rigid shells and orthoses are a different process, and we supply that too with HP Multi Jet Fusion.

Material

Foam, printed

The IdeaFOAMer runs an EVOK3D-approved foaming TPU. The material foams as it prints, which gives a soft, light insole from a single filament.

The material's formulation includes silver, which is known for its antimicrobial properties. This describes the material. It is not a claim that a finished insole prevents or treats infection.

Machine, process and material have been developed and tested together, so you are not starting from a blank profile and working it out on your own time.

Firmness

Three firmness levels, one material

Choose soft, medium or firm for the insole. All three come from the same material, so there are no separate grades to stock for each firmness. How an insole feels also depends on its design and thickness.

In wear testing of our soft and medium test builds, a qualified podiatrist working with us on this workflow rated them excellent, with the soft very comfortable and the medium quite firm. That is one practitioner's assessment, not a clinical study.

Slicing

Pre-configured for the ProXimal cloud slicer

ProXimal is EVOK3D's cloud slicing service, written for insoles on this machine. There is no slicer to install on your own computer and no print settings to tune. Your finished design goes to ProXimal and comes back ready to print, with a setup designed to help keep foam density and finish consistent from one insole to the next. Results depend on the design.

A direct connection from design software through to the printer is in development. ProXimal is licensed separately from the printer, with details to be confirmed at release.

Design software

Built around Artura3D

The workflow is built around Artura3D, third party orthotic design software that runs in a browser. Artura3D describes itself as one platform for custom orthotics, from 3D foot scan to finished device: scan, order with a guided prescription, design, make.

Its design tools include thickness heatmaps, scan compare, heel stabilisers, extensions, skives, grooves, cutouts, apertures and debossed logos. Artura3D is currently in early access to podiatry clinics and orthotic manufacturers, and is licensed separately by Artura3D. Visit artura3d.com to find out more.

Throughput

About 1.5 hours an insole

Our full insole test builds took about 1.5 hours each, or about three hours a pair. Your time will depend on the size and geometry of the insole.

The conveyor belt lets insoles print one after another, each carried clear of the print area as it finishes. The machine detects a filament runout or break and pauses. Reload and the job picks up where it left off.

Monitoring

See the job from anywhere

Wi-Fi, LAN and USB. The integrated camera lets you see the job from a phone, tablet or desktop, so you can attend to the machine when you are not physically in front of it (the machine should not be left to run unattended).

Traceability

Know which batch made which insole

Printer management software is in development to record the filament batch against each print job. Together with a controlled production workflow, it is intended to support practitioners in meeting their medical device and traceability obligations. Those obligations remain with the practitioner or lab making the device.

Scale

One, a pair or a small fleet

Order one, run a pair, or deploy a small fleet. EVOK3D recommends two machines as a minimum, as most people have at least two feet. From there, the solution scales with demand.

The system has been conceived for both high volume production in a central fab and production at the point of care in the clinic. Choose the setup that suits how you work.
